Tao Te Ching endures – Number 76

Tao Te Ching book coverWisdom from the Tao Te Ching endures.

The Tao Te Ching is one of the fundamental texts of Taoism.
Written thousands of years ago as 81 verses to contemplate, the Tao Te Ching endures the test of time and offers perspectives that guide me today. This morning, I “randomly” opened to number 76.

Seventy Six
A person is born gentle and weak.
At their death they are hard and stiff.
Green plants are tender and filled with sap.
At their death they are weathered and dry.
Therefore the stiff and unbending is the disciple of death.
The gentle and yielding is the disciple of life.
Thus an army without flexibility never wins a battle.
A tree that is unbending is easily broken.
The hard and strong will fall.
The soft and weak will overcome.

Quoted from the Tao Te Ching, translated by Gia-Fu Feng and Jane English
